NATURAL CUES

Early May at Anker is when the first mallard ducklings appear in the pond, when delicious big leaf maple flowers emerge, when the hawthorn trees fully bloom, and it's usually the last few days you smell the spicy-sweet aroma of the cottonwood trees. Our lawns are verdant green, and green lavender stems appear.

NATURAL CUES

During mid-May at Anker, the first salmonberries often appear along the path behind the pond, little juncos can be seen building their nests, and the first tiger swallowtail butterflies are typically seen in the garden. The lawns are still lush and green.

NATURAL CUES

During late May at Anker, additional broods of ducklings or geese paddle the pond, the green frogs appear around the waterfall patio, and the sycamore trees will begin their false fall by dropping about 10% of their leaves. The lawns remain green.

Early June at Anker is a delightful mix of emerging plants and wildlife, with various fowl on the pond, butterflies in the air, and the very first hydrangeas appearing on the drive, and water lilies at the waterfall patio. The lavender stems are still green, as is the grass.

Mid-June at Anker sees the longest days of the year, with more than 16 hours of daylight! Its also when incredibly fragrant sweet alyssum appears along the ponds edge and the first English lavender varieties start to bloom.

Late June at Anker is a beautiful time of transition as the lavender farm becomes a wavy purple blanket and the hydrangeas begin their show. Its also when the fragrant mock orange flowers appear, the nootka rose hedge begins to bloom and guests with hay fever should beware.

Early July is Anker is when the lavender farm looks its best, with both the English and French lavender varieties in bloom. Amongst edibles, as birds eat the last salmonberries, delicious thimbleberries typically appear. Early July is also when the orchards earliest plums ripen.

NATURAL CUES

Mid-July at Anker is when our lavender farm reaches peak purple.” For a few days, our early and late varieties bloom simultaneously. Mid-July is also when our neighbors at the Forsyth cattle farm bail their hay. Areas of the lawn begin to brown.

In late July, the hydrangeas and lavender continue their impressive show as lavender harvest continues. As the seasons first blackberries typically ripen, in recent years, a blanket of duckweed begins to cover the ponds surface.

The warm and dry days of early August at Anker turn most of the non-irrigated lawns to brown. On the bright side, this is also when the Drive and Sward areas reach peak-hydrangea, as the white flowering varieties join the blues.

In late August, the orchards sweet purple plums ripen and several types of apples appear amongst the leaves. By this point in the summer, the lavender provides little color, but still some interesting texture for photos. The grass across much of the Park is fully parched.

Although early September at Anker still feels like the height of summer, its also when we see the very first signs of fall- a few leaves begin to turn at the Big Maple, and propane heaters are rolled out for guests in the evenings.

Mid-September at Anker is often when we receive our first refreshing rains after increasingly dry summers. When this happens, the lawns will slowly awaken. Fall foliage continues to appear, especially amongst the sugar maples on the far northern parts of the Park.

In late September, daylight dips below 12 hours for the first time since mid-March. Nature takes its cue, with turning leaves on the maples and sycamores, and migrating Canada geese overhead. Lucky foragers may find their first Pacific golden chanterelle mushrooms.
